What are some reactions to mild/moderate food allergies?
- hives
- tingling mouth
- swelling of lips, face, eyes
- abdominal pain/vomiting
What are some symptoms to severe reactions (anaphylaxis)?
- pale and floppy (young children)
- noisy/difficult breathing
- swelling of the tongue
- swelling/tightness of throat
- persistent dizziness/collapse
What is an allergy co-factor?
A factor that influences the severity of a reaction e.g. heat, alcohol, exercise can increase the severity
How is a food allergy diagnosed?
Gold standard: exclusion diet + double blind placebo controlled oral food challenge
Clinical Hx, followed by skin prick test/blood test for food allergen specific IgE, followed by oral food challenge
What are the nutrients at risk in a cows milk, egg, seafood and nut free diet?
calcium, protein, B12
What are the nutrients at risk in a soy, egg and beef free diet?
protein, B12, iron
