FOM Test Flashcards
What are the check in times for a DH flight within Canada?
Canada to International?
45 min
1 hr
When does flight watch commence?
At the approval of an OFP by the dispatcher and continues until the completion or cancellation of the flight
What is modified flight watch?
Evacuation of dispatch so flight watch rests with the flight crew until further advised.
How long before OFP notams and weather need to be checked if still valid?
If more than 2 hours have passed since the OFP was retrieved by the Flight Crew, confirmation shall be made that the NOTAMS and weather are still valid.
(FOM 8.1.3.2)
When does PIC take control over final decisions on any changes to OFP?
With the application of take off thrust.
What is done with an irreconcilable difference in opinions between capt and dispatch
PIC takes the conservative course of action
(FOM 8.1.3.4)
How is missed approach performance calculated?
By who?
Why?
Dispatch at planned landing weight, one engine inop climb gradient. If steeper than standard, crew must verify prior to approach that one eng inop meets climb gradients.
Air Canada Performance engineering
To provide lower MDA/DA’s, some approaches use Non-Standard Climb Gradients in the missed approach design when a standard missed approach climb design would result in unreasonably high minima.
What is the standard climb gradient?
2.5%
What 10 things must you check on a OFP?

Date
Fin and type
Distance against GC distance for errors
Temp/WX

What are the terrain clearance check altitude and distance either side of track?
1,000 ft and 5 sm
If can’t do it you must use escape charts
CARS requires you use the factored eng out level off altitude
What is P-RAIM check for
To ensure required navigation precision is available at enroute, approach phases
Can you dispatch without a valid TAF?
Yes
However you do need a valid TAF for alternates
And have no Known factors precluding a safe landing
How long of a delay before dispatch must reassess the conditions of the OFP?

What is the difference between NAT and Pacific ETOPS operations with respect to squaking 2000
NAT 2000 30 min after entry
Pacific 2000 when entering and oceanic FIR
All others maintain current Transponder

Debrief
FOM 12.13.11
Can you take off without CONT?
No, need 5 min of CONT fuel
But can burn into it
(Technically not req in Canada)
Is CONT available at ETOPS critical point?
Yes but at a percentage of what’s remaining in the flight
ie if at 65% of flight, then 35% available
What is used to calculate the fuel NAIFR SAP?
Fuel for a missed approach, 2nd approach. No less than 12 min of fuel at 1500 ASL in ISA
What is reserve fuel?
If you burn into it?
Hold for 30 min at destination at ELW and 1500ft ASL
File an ASR and it constitutes a fuel emergency
Is taxiing into a gate considered in taxi fuel
No
What fuels does flight fuel not include ?
Taxi and Extra
What is min take off fuel include?
Can you take off below it?
Protected fuels + Burn
BURN
RESERVE
MEL
Cont 5 min
NAIFR SAP
ALTN
ETOPS
No you cannot take of below it!
(CAUTION: MIN T/O FUEL does not include fuel for terminal/enroute weather or ATC delays)
(FOM 8.1.6.4)
When do we have to contact dispatch regarding fuel on board?
Before push?
Before T/O
At wypt?
Less than Block fuel at pushback,
less than Flight fuel at start of take-off,
AFOB is less than MFOB over a waypoint.
Can you consume CONT fuel or additional fuel on the ground?
Yes, but contact dispatch and you both must be satisfied fuel is adequate, if unable to contact, advise ASAP when airborne.
When is a T/O alternate required?
USA differences?
CAN/USA <2600 RVR or 1/2 SM or if below landing minimums ( can’t use CAT II)
USA - ceiling and vis at T/O ALTN must meet the requirements at time of T/O and ETA
What are the take off alternate time/distance requirements?
Speed?
60 min OEI cruise speed, zero wind
351 nm 60 min
At 310 Kts
What types of terminals can be used as T/O alternates?
D -Destinations
A - Alternates
EC-Escape chart only airports
(Found in the AC Tab Coverage)
If a destination has no TAF what is needed?
2 alternates planned at ETA
Alternate airports with TAFs that have:
BECMG
TEMPO
INTER
PROB
What are the restrictions?
BECMG-improving at end of period/ if deteriorating at beginning
TEMPO/INTER- not below published min
PROB-not below landing minima for that aerodrome
(PROB 30, TEMPO/PROB 40 May be disregarded)
Can an aerodrome with just a Aerodrome Advisory forecast or GFA be used as an alternate?
Yes,
Aerodrome Advisory No wx lower than 500 above the lowest useable HAT/HAA and not less than 3 sm.
GFA 1,000 ft above HAT/HAA and 3 sm, and no cumulus
How do you use ceiling values for HAT/HAA for weather forecasts, what are the increments?
Up to and including 20 ft use the lower 100ft, above 20 ft use the higher 100ft increments
Alternate wx minima other than US?
2 or more usable precision approaches each providing straight in to separate runways:
400-1 or 200-1/2 above lowest usable HAT and visibility, whichever is greater.
ii)one usable precision approach: 600-2 or 300-1 above lowest usable HAA and visibility,
whichever is greater
iii) non-precision only: 800-2 or 300-1 above lowest usable HAA and visibility, whichever is
greater
iv) no IFR approach: no lower than 500 feet above a minimum IFR altitude that shall permit a VFR approach and landing. (1500meters=1sm)
Only in Canada can you slide the 600-2 and the 800-2
US alternate wx?
2 or more usable precision approaches each providing straight in to separate runways: 400-1 or 200-1/2 to the higher of the two usable HAT and visibility, whichever is greater.
ii)one usable precision approach: 600-2 or add 400-1 to the HAT and visibility, whichever is greater
iii) non-precision only: 800-2 or add 400-1 to the HAT/HAA and visibility, whichever is greater
Special requirements for GNSS based approach alternates?
Flight crew qualified, and a/c serviceable for the approach. A minimum of 100nm separation is required when a GNSS based approach is planned for both destination and alternate. Otherwise, wx must be based on a non GNSS approach. If can’t do 100nm and no other approach-NO IFR approach applicable shall be planned for the alternate. Also, need a P-RAIM check completed.
NAIFR aerodrome requirements? Wx requirements?
. WXi1 hour before and after ETA: in Canada 1000ft above FAF and 3sm (second lowest limits) or 1500ft ceiling and 6sm. US: 2000ft and 3sm. BOTH: no fog or restrictions to visibility including precip below 3 miles, no TRWs no risk of freezing precip. 2 runways and 2 IFR approaches (only one GNSS), emergency standby electrical power. (Any airport with an ILS of 250ft meets this) One runway meets wet landing distance, and the other meets distance of forecast conditions. (One rwy can be closed if made available)
6 hours scheduled flight time: Take-off from North, Central or South American continents , the Caribbean islands or Bermuda. 6-8 hours of flight time: take-off from North American continent and land in North American continent except Mexico. 4-6 hours out, PIC shall obtain confirmation from dispatch that aerodrome is still acceptable
Where can’t we go NAIFR?
DCA Washington and YYT St. John’s
Should you fire cargo suppressants with vehicle emission activating detection systems?
No
What do you do if you find a “Maintenance in Progress Tag” over thrust levers?
Power off: if tag over thrust lever quadrant, NO part of any flight deck control shall be touched without speaking to maintenance.
Power on: no hydraulic system turned on, no engines/APU started or motored, no flight control systems turned on or actuated and no fuel systems turned on.
Customs of Inspection notice says panels were removed, what do you do?
Confirm with MTC panels were secured properly.
How do you contact MTC after pushback?
Through dispatch.
