FOM (Backup Copy) Flashcards
- What are the crosswind limitations for CAT II/III approaches?
- Can you continue an approach if, after the crossing the FAF the RVR drops below what is required?
- Crosswind component can not exceed 15kt
- No. A go-around must be conducted after passing the FAF (or the published altitude of G/S intercepts if no FAF exists), if the RVR drops or flucuates below what is required for the approach.
FOM Rev. 40 8.11.6.6 4
Approaches in reported visibility _________ shall be flown by the Captain.

FOM Rev 40 8.11.7.1
In the US, CAT I ILS approaches are not authorized using ground visibility values below _________.
1/2 sm. RVR values are required.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.7.2
The following visual approahes are prohibited unless specified in the Jeppesen Route Manual 10-10 pages:
a)
b)
When conducting a night visual approach, flights crews shall not deviate from the published IFR route/altitudes until ___________.

FOM Rev 40 8.11.8.1 5.
Is Air Canada authorized to conduct circling approahces?
What can you do instead? What are some considerations?
What are the weather minimums?
No, Air Canada is not authorized to conduct circling approaches at published circling minima.
If such an approach is required, you can do so in accordance with the visual maneuvering procedures.
If there are no published straight-in minima, flight crews are authorized to conduct IFR approaches to the higher minima of:
- 1000’ HAA; or
- Where charted CAT D circling MDA is higher than 700’ HAA, the charted CAT D MDA + 300’ 1.
Visual Maneuvering weather requirments:
- no lower than 1500’ ceiling
- 3 sm visibility
FOM Rev 40 8.11.8.2
Are night VFR ops permitted?
No, they are prohibited.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.9
Can the IFR be cancelled on arrival?
Yes, but ony during the day, and only if you can continue VFR weather-wise, and continuing IFR would result in unnecessary delays.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.9
Can the approach be continued if the IAS or descent rate fluctuations exceed normal stable approach policy limits?
Yes, if the fluctuations are due to certain factors such as gusty conditions, slow A/THR response, etc., and are brief in duration, and can be corrected promptly with normal control/power inputs.
FOM Rev 40 8.11.10
For approaches that require lateral maneuvering below minimums, the aircraft shall be established on the extended runway centreline by _______.
300’ AAE
FOM Rev 40 8.11.10.1

Who is responsible for terrain/obstacle clearance during a go-around?
What is the minimum altitude for turns after a go-around?
No, once the call has been made, the go-around shall be executed.
The flight crew. ATC procedures do not require ATC to provide terrain and obstacle clearance when they provide missed approach instructions.
A turn should not be started lower than 500’ AGL in any case after a go-around, and could be as high as an IFR sector altitude.
FOM Rev 40 8.12.1
What is the FOM stable approach criteria for each gate?
1000’ AAE - Configuration Gate:
- The aircraft should be fully configured for landing (gear/flaps/spoilers)
500’ AAE - Stable Gate
- The aircraft should meet the stable approach tolerances in accordace with the AOM
200’ AAE - Go-Around Gate
- No flight shall continue to landing past this gate unless the Configuration and Stable Gate requirements are fully met
- When the DA is below 300’ AAE and auto callouts are not available, the DA/Minimums call will also act as the Go-Around Gate
FOM Rev 40 8.11.4
