What year was this work first performed?
-The 18th of March 2003
-this is the day the USA bombed Iraq, which reinforces America being a superpower and extremely powerful
What is the subject matter?
-set in a post 9/11 triangular site, protagonists wake up realising they’ve survived a disaster and try to find a way out of this no exit place
-they are surrounded by invisible angel like dancing beings who manipulate the actions of the protagonists
-each time they think they’re safe, a new disaster hits such as a gas leak, earthquake and hammering
What is the physical setting?
-triangular set,
-the musicians positioned on a balcony above the stage (Capillar Flamenca, not an orchestra).
-lots of props used: a desk chair = giving realism of set, boxing gloves with the American flag on them= America is a superpower, photograph of a person on the walls, gas canister to show gas explosion, smears of blood on the walls, newspapers and clipboards = All helps to set the scene and make it feel more real, and use of everyday objects to show disasters can happen to anyone to anytime, anywhere
-the protagonists costumes are brightly coloured
-the angel costumes are very neutral, lose fitting
Give an acrobatic movement example from this work and the interpretation
-one of the angel dancers is positioned centre stage and he tucks his knees into his chest then extends them straight up into a hand stand. He remains completely still and on balance whilst all the other dancers vibrate and shake violently around him in an earthquake
-use of acrobatics and being in an upside down orientation and completely still shows his spiritual calmness and strength, whilst the physical world is falling apart and can be destroyed
Give a kung fu movement example and the interpretation
-the angel male slides on his knees to quickly stand up facing US then does a 540 degree turning jump tucking one knee in whilst kicking the other leg up, throwing both his arms up above his head
-this a traditional kung fu movement and shows the spirituality of the angel and the almost power to defy gravity, Bruce lee influence
Give an animalistic movement and the interpretation
He curls up on his side facing DS then goes into a shoulder roll circling his feet over his head keeping contact with the floor, then goes straight into a cartwheel on his head, splitting his legs upside down
-this floor work sequence and continuing rolling movement looks very fluid and could show the angel’s non human qualities due to unusual orientation and fluidity and continuity
