Fog Types Flashcards
When does fog form?
When the temperature and dewpoint of the air approach the same value.
How does advection fog form?
When moist air moves over a colder surface, results in cooling of the near-surface air to below its dewpoint temperature
How does radiation fog form?
Produced by radiational cooling.
-Under stable nighttime conditions, long-wave radiation is emitted by the ground. This cools the ground, which causes a temperature inversion. In turn, moist air near the ground cools to its dewpoint.
How does upslope fog form?
Occurs when sloping terrain lifts air, cooling it adiabatically to its dewpoint and saturation
How does steam fog form?
In northern latitude, forms when water vapor is added to the air that is much colder then condenses into fog
What are the three types of frontal fog?
1) warm front pre-frontal fog
2) cold front pos-frontal fog
3) frontal-passage fog
What causes pre and post-frontal fog?
When rain falls into cold, stable air it raises the dewpoint.
What is ice fog and where does it form?
Fog composed of ice crystals and forms in extremely cold, arctic air
Where does a significant amount of ice fog form?
In extremely cold air, near the burning of hydrocarbon fuels which adds large quantities of water vapor to the air.
What type of fog can stand high winds?
Upslope fog
What fog type causes the lowest visibility?
Steam fog
