Four primary methods of extinguishment?
Smother-prevents air from mixing with flammable vapors
Suppressing- stops release of flammable vapors
Separates- the flame from the surface of the fuel
Cools- water content of the foam cools the fuel further reducing vapor generation

- preferred use if ENTRY into pool of fuel must be made…apply continuously when members enter foam blanket
- 1000 gallons of Fuoropolydo is carried in BOOSTER TANKS OF FOAM CARRIER 206 AND 95
- FOAM CARRIERS carry 5 gallon cans, as do Satellite units

Fire in Confined Area…Tanks/Pits…
imperative that enough foam is on the scene before operation is started
- if there is sufficient freeboard-direct stream and side /back-foam will gently fall over surface
- if top of container is close to ground and there is little or no freeboard–stream should be directed to ground, bounce foam
- if tank is filled to top…insure product level is within 5 feet from top

Tanker Truck Accident with a leak…
once spill is abate and leak stopped, a decision has to be made whether or not to allow the tanker to proceed or to have it loaded ….if you are confident the vehicle can move without the leak starting again , an engine company can ESCORT the vehicle to a loading facility in NYC

- older steel tanks can BLEVE (newer aluminum..less likely)
- -when chance of BELEVE exists- extremely important to get LARGE CALIBER STREAM ON THE VAPOR AREA quickly
- this should be done BEFORE, or after enough manpower is on the scene in conjunction with stretching foam hand line
