Fluvioglacial landscapes Flashcards
Meltwater channels
Melt water channels are:
Highly erosive
V shaped
Deep
Steep sides
Sinuous (windy)
Water may flow uphill
Supraglacial
Englacial
Subglacial
Crevasse Kames
Crevasse kames
* Material carried and deposited by meltwater falls down cracks in the ice
* When the ice melts material carried by meltwater into crevasses, is deposited on the valley floor
–> round/sorted material = fluvioglacial
Kame terrace
- Ice marginal lakes form on the edge of glaciers and can get infilled with deposited material
- Deposited material left on valley side when ice melts - can be confused with lateral morraine
Delta Kame
Meltwater streams which flow into ice marginal lakes which slow down when entering the lake drop off material, forming a delta which is sorted and rounded material.
Eskers
Formed from supraglacial, englacial, and subglacial meltwater streams which deposited rounded sorted material. Eskers are the linear feature which marks the course of the meltwater stream
Outwash plain (Sandur)
Found at the glacier’s snout. It is a dynamic landscape and are seasonal. Moew meltwater streams in the summer. Fluvioglacial so material is rounded and sorted and covers a flat area.
