Erosional landforms Flashcards
1
Q
Corries
A
- A deepend hollow on a mountain side often with scree at its base
- Starts as a nirvation hollow - eroded by freeze thaw weathering
2
Q
Arete
A
A knife edge ridge that forms between two corries
3
Q
Pyramidal peak (horn)
A
3 or 4 corries eroded back to back
4
Q
Glacial valley (Glacial trough)
A
Deep sided ‘U shaped valley’ falt-bottomed and often several hundred metres deep
Asymetrical valley sides due to scree slopes
5
Q
Hanging valley
A
A tributary valley which has a small glacier and can’t erode far enoiugh down to the main glacier
6
Q
Truncated spurs
A
Where a glacier has bulldozed through interlocking spurs leaving jagged edges
7
Q
Roche Moutonée
A
- Outcropes of rock that have been sulpted
- On upstream side an increase in pressure causes resistance of the rock outcrop to the moving ice leads to localised pressure melting. Abrasion causes polishing and stritations
- On downstream side, the reduction in pressure causes meltwater to freeze forming a bond between the rocky outcrop which plucks rocks
