Ciprofloxain, norofloxacin, levofloxacin
Mechanism
Inhibit DNA gyrase
Pharmacokinetics
chelate divalent and trivalent cations (do not give with dairy or antacids)
administered once a day
Drug interactions
Inhibits CYP (lots of caffeine -> seizures; inhibits warfarin metabolism)
Adverse reactions
CNS problems
Phototoxicity
Contraindicated
children under 18 years, pregnant or nursing women
Clinical uses
UTI and prostatitis (P. aeruginosa, Enterbacteriaceae)
Diarrhea & travelers diarrhea (shigella, camplobacter, salmonella, E. coli)
Sinusitis & bronchitis (pneumococci, H. influ)
Levofloxacin use
Community acquired pneumonia (cipro/noro NOT effective)
