what is the ideal maintenance fluid
A
25–30 ml/kg/day of water and
approximately 1 mmol/kg/day of potassium, sodium and chloride and
approximately 50–100 g/day of glucose to limit starvation ketosis.

when might you omit glucose from a maintenance fluid
A
caution in cerebral injury e.g. stroke as may exacerbate this. May only initially omit

how much IV fluids to give
A
for a 70kg male would be 2L a day, however obese patients should not exceed 3L

A
sodium chloride 0.9% potassium chloride 0.3% glucose 5%
