Species parameters
Horse
HR= 30-40bpm
Temperature (c) = 37.3- 38.2
Respiration (breaths/min) = 12-20
Cow
HR =60-80
Temperature (c) = 38-39

Temperature = 38.3-39.9
Respiration - 16-35
Dog
HR = 70-140
Temperature = 38.3- 39.2
Respiration = 10-30
Cat
HR = 140- 200
Temperature = 38.2- 38.6
Respiration = 20-30
Rabbit
HR = 130-325
Temperature = 38.5- 40
Respiration = 30-60
How to work out fluid requirements?
Fluid requirement (ml) = extravascular fluid deficit (ml) + maintenance requirements (ml) + ongoing loss (ml)
How to work out extravascular fluid deficit
% dehydration x body weight (kg) x 10
How to work out maintenance requirements
2ml/kg/hr
so 2 x kg per hr
How to work out ongoing loss (ml)
just an estimate
How do you monitor a patients response?
Using clinical signs
- Maintenance of normal hydration without evidence of volume overload
- Normal urine output (at least 2ml/kg/hr for canine)
- Resp rate within normal range
Moist membranes
- Good appetite and drinking
