Fluid Statics - Negative pressure Flashcards
When does the pressure become negative?
When the fluid is lifted above the water level
What does the negative pressure tell you?
Tells you it is below atmospheric pressure
Why is the pressure in the air the same as the pressure in the fluid in a closed container?
The system is not moving and in equilibrium - neglecting hydrostatic changes
What is the horizontal force?
Force on the equivalent vertical dam
What is the vertical force?
Weight of the fluid
What happens when a body is immersed in water?
If a body is immersed in water, the hydrostatic pressure distribution causes a net upward buoyancy force.
What does an angled surface produce?
An angled surface produces (locally) the same
forces as a surface with horizontal and vertical
walls.
What does not influence the horizontal force?
The shape of a surface does not influence the horizontal force
acting on it
For partially submerged structure what is the vertical force?
The vertical force is the weight of
the fluid up to the free surface.
