Fluid Resistance (Drag) Flashcards
Define a fluid?
Something that flows.
Are liquids and gases fluids?
YES, because they both flow.
When is drag experienced?
When an object travels through a fluid, and it feels some resistance to its motion.
How is drag actually caused (Molecules wise)?
As the object travels it pushes the fluid out of the way, friction is created by the contact between the molecules of the fluid and the solid surface.
Is it true that the faster an object moves through a fluid the greater the drag?
TRUE! Because more molecules move past each other each second.
What does drag also depend on?
Viscosity
What is viscosity?
Is a measure of how easily a fluid will flow.
Is Viscosity temperature dependant?
YES!
How does temperature affect viscosity of fluids?
Heat increases the speed of the liquid molecules, decreasing the intermolecular forces.
What is the difference between Laminar and Turbulent Flow on a diagram?
What are lines of flow called?
Streamlines
How do the streamlines move in a pipe with Laminar flow?
- Parallel to each other.
- No mixing
What is the pace at which Turbulent flow occurs called?
- The CRITICAL SPEED
What is different in terms of fluid particles, when comparing Turbulent flow to Laminar Flow?
- Turbulent flow the speed and direction of the fluid particles are constantly changing.
