Fluid, Electrolytes & Acid-Base Flashcards
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
Holds onto fluid, promotes absorption of water
Aldosterone
Promotes the reabsorption of water and sodium and the excretion of potassium
Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP)
Promotes the reabsorption of potassium and the excretion of sodium and water
Filtration
Movement of fluid from capillary to interstitial space. Uses hydrostatic pressure (pushing).
Osmosis
Movement of fluid from interstitial space into capillary. Uses osmotic pressure (pulling)
Fluid Excess - Causes
Kidney failure Liver failure Heart failure Increased sodium intake IV fluids Blood transfusions
Fluid Excess - Manifestations
Dypsnea Decreased lab values - hemodiluted Increased urine output HTN Bounding pulse JVD Edema
Edema - Causes
Increased capillary hydrostatic pressure (HTN)
Decreased capillary osmotic pressure (liver disease)
Increased capillary permeability (histamine)
Obstruction of the lymphatic circulation (cancer)
Edema - Complications
Restriction in range of motion at joints
Pain
Decreased arterial circulation
Skin breakdown/damage
