Fluid Dynamics Flashcards
Specific Gravity Equation
SG = weight of sample / weight of equal volume of water
What do we use to measure specific gravity?
Hydrometer
If the hydrometer measures more than 1000, what happens to the float?
Float will rise
If the hydrometer is less than 1000, where does the float sit?
The float will sink
If the float is =1000
The float is fully immersed in pure water
What is viscosity?
Viscosity is the opposition to flow
What happens to the viscosity in a LIQUID if temperature is increased?
Viscosity will decrease
What happens to the viscosity in a GAS if temperature is increased?
Viscosity will increase
What is the unit for viscosity?
Ns/m^2
What does streamlining do?
Decreases the friction
Reduces air resistance
How do you work out the total pressure?
Total pressure = static pressure + dynamic pressure
What does static pressure depend on?
Height
What does dynamic pressure depend on?
Flow
How do you find the absolute pressure?
Units?
Absolute Pressure = Gauge Pressure + Atmospheric Pressure
Units: N/m^2
At sea level, what is the atmosphere in lbs./inch^2 and in mmHg?
14.7 lbs./in^2
760 mmHg
What does Bernoulli’s Principle state?
When a fluid is in motion (without energy being added or taken away) :
Potential energy decreases when kinetic energy increases
Pressure decreases when velocity increases
What does volume flow rate suggest with Bernoulli’s Principle?
A constant flow of fluid through a pipe for 1 minute will give you the same volume of water out as a constant flow of fluid through the same pipe, if squeezed, for one minute.
If a pipe is raised higher, what does that mean for the pressure?
Pressure will also increase
What is the pressure if a fluid determined by?
Height
Boiling and freezing point of water in degrees Celcius?
Boiling point : 100 degrees
Freezing point : 0 degrees
Boiling and freezing point of water in Kelvin?
Boiling point : 373 K
Freezing point : 273K
Boiling and freezing point of water in Farenheit?
Boiling point : 212 degrees Farenheit
Freezing point : 32 degrees Farenheit
