Fluid Dynamics Flashcards
Power
The rate at which energy is transferred; how fast work is being performed.
Watts = Joules/sec
Work
The amount of energy transferred; the integration of the total power used to complete a job over time
Joules
Energy
A conceptual quantity which includes many different physical forms such as mass, kinetic, potential, heat, radiation, etc.
Many different units depending on the type
Potential energy
Energy that is stored which can be converted to other forms of energy
Kinetic energy
Energy related to movement and is proportional to the velocity squared of the movement
Pressure
A measure of force per unit area; can be broken down into two different categories: static (associated with potential energy) and dynamic (related to kinetic energy)
Volumetric Flow
The volume of fluid per time which moves past a point
liters/min or m^3/sec, etc
Resistance
The ration of the pressure drop across a vessel (or flow path) per volumetric flow; a measure of the impediment that must be overcome for flow to occur
Capacitance
A measure of the ability to hold a change in volume per change in time or (dV/dt) where V is the volume and t is the time
Compliance
The ratio of the change in volume to a change in pressure (dV/dP) where V is the volume and P is the pressure
Velocity
The speed with which a fluid moves in a specific direction (units of m/sec)
Viscosity (fluid)
The ratio of the shear stress to the shear rate of a fluid; a measure of the resistance of a fluid to flow due to the attraction of the molecules
