FBC

A
  • Indicate 30mLs/kg/day
  • Output 0.5mls/kg/hour
  • Observe for trends, e,g. Gradually decreasing urine output, gradually increasing fluid retention
  • Review regularly during shift to determine trends
  • Balance is calculated at end of every shift and also at the end of 24hr period at midnight

Anything that is liquid at room temperature or anything that melts at room temp

Patients who MUST have a FBC

A
  • All patients with CCF/Heart failure/ fluid restriction/ prescribed diuretic
  • All patients with sepsis, septic shock, shock, blood loss
  • For clinically deteriorating patient refer to PACE policy
  • All patients with acute renal failure
  • Any patient with diarrhea/vomiting
  • All post-op patients for at least 24 hours
  • All trauma patients for at least 24 hours
  • All TURP patients as per pathway
  • Any patient with a newly formed ileostomy
  • Any patient with a new (less than 1 month post insertion) invasive drainage tube or external device
  • All patients receiving intravenous fluid, medications or blood products that meet any of the above criteria

FBC: Special Notations

A
  • If you can’t measure the output (i.e. incontinence/diarrhoea/vomiting/chronic renal failure/WHS exposure risk) think daily weight and consult team
  • Daily weights must occur at the same time each day using the same weighing device
