Fluid Balance Flashcards
Apical Membrane
The surface of a plasma membrane that faces the lumen
Atrial Natriuretic Peptide
A polypeptide hormone that causes vasodilation
Baroreflexes
A negative feedback system which buffers short erm changes in bloom pressure
Extracellular Fluid
All body fluid outside of cells
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
The volume of fluid filtered from the renal(kidney) glomerular capillarities into the Bowman’s capsule per unit time.
Homeostasis
The body’s ability to physiologically regulate its inner environment to ensure its stability in response to fluctuations in the outside environment and the weather
Intracellular Fluid (ICF)
All body fluid inside of cells
Membrane Potential
The difference in voltage (or electrical potential difference ) between the interior and exterior of a cell
Osmolality
The number of osmoses per Kg
Osmolarity
the number of Osmoses per litre of solution
Osmole
1 gram molecular weight of solute
Osmotic Pressure
The pressure which needs to be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of water across a semipermeable membrane
Tonicity
A measure of the osmotic pressure (as defined by the water potential of the two solutions) of two solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane
Parasympathetic Nervous System
A part of the nervous system that slows the heart rate, increase the intestinal and gland activity and relax the sphincter muscles
Sympathetic Nervous System
A part of the nervous system that accelerates the heart rate, constricts the blood vessels and raises the blood pressure
