What are the four stages of a fire?
- Incipient. A fire extinguisher can still put it out.

- Supervisory Alarms
- Trouble signals
- Fire alarms
What is an initiating device?
It is a device that initiates a fire alarm, such as a manual pull station or smoke alarm.
Does the FCP contact the Fire Department directly?
No, the alarm signal is sent to the Central Station, who then sends it to the FDNY.
In which of the 3 fire panel alarms do the fire trucks automatically show up?
Fire Alarm.
What is a supervisory Signal?
It is a signal sent through the fire panel that notifies a portion of the system or a device is compromised.
Who immediately investigates and corrects a supervisory signal?
FLSD. If cannot be fixed, contractor is called.
Is a supervisory signal sent to Central Station?
Yes, however it is not forwarded to the FDNY.
What is a trouble signal?
It is a signal to inform that all or part of a system is OOS. For example a ground fault or phone line failure.
True or false: A trouble signal is sent to Central Station?
False.
True or false: FLSD is able to silence an alarm when they decide it is not an emergency?
False. FLSD can ONLY silence an alarm when instructed to do so by the FDNY
When can you reset an alarm?
When the FDNY tells you to.
What are the 7 types of initiating devices:
- Smoke Detector
- Elevator Lobby smoke detectors
- Duct smoke detectors
- Heat detectors
- Sprinkler waterflow alarm
- Manual Pull station
- Carbon Monoxide Detector
If a Smoke detector needs cleaning, how soon must it be done?
Within a week.
True or false: Elevator smoke detectors will recall the elevators to designated floor.
True.
What do Duct Smoke Detectors do?
Shut down the HVAC system to prevent the spread of smoke.
What are the two types of heat detectors?
- Rate of Rise - detects a rapid rise in temperature and does not need to be replaced.
- Fixed Temperature - it melts at a predetermined temperature but does have to be replaced.
What does a sprinkler waterflow alarm detect?
The movement of water within the sprinkler system.
True or False: A sprinkler waterflow alarm does not effect the elevators.
False. A sprinkler waterflow alarm will automatically recall the elevators.
Where must manual pull stations be located?
Next to all exits of the building.
True or false: Upon getting permission to reset a manual pull station you must first reset the fire panel.
False. Always reset the pull station first otherwise the alarm will go off again.
What are the two types of manual pull station alarms.
- Single action
- double action.
If a Co2 alarm cannot be reset what may it indicate?
That there is still Co2 present in the building.
Carbon Monoxide detectors are required in what buildings?
Any building that uses fossil fuels.
What are 4 fire prevention features related to a fire alarm ? (That help prevent the spread of fire)
- Smoke Dampers (HVAC control)
- Elevator recall
- Fire door release
- Stairway Failsafe doors (unlock)
How many hours of backup power must all alarms have?
6 hours
True or false: All alarms must have visual and audio devices.
True.
If a fire occurs on a certain floor, where are the alarms required to activate?
On that floor and the floor above.
When a standpipe system is out of order, you must do one of two things. What are they?
- evacuate the building
- maintain a fire watch
How often must a fire watch patrol an area?

- Manual
What happens when you put an elevator in phase 1.
It recalls the elevator to the lobby and the car is dead but the building is alive (meaning other elevators will operate)
What is Phase 2 in regards to elevators?
It is emergency in car operation. The building is dead (meaning no elevators working) but the elevator can be used for FDNY.
In order for an elevator to be put in Phase 2 emergency services, what has to be done first?
It must be put in phase 1.
When elevator panel is put back in service which phase will NOT return to normal?
Phase 2
Phase 1 of an elevator emergency service is activated by the following:
