Flowers Flashcards
What is self pollination?
Where pollen is carried to a stigma in the same flower
What is cross pollination?
Where pollen is carried to a stigma in another plant
When does pollination take place?
When pollen is carried from an anther to a stigma
When does a new seed begin life?
When the male sex cell in a pollen grain joins up with a female sex cell in an ovule
What happens when the anther ripens?
The pollen sac splits open releasing pollen grains
What animals can carry pollen from flower to flower?
Bees and other insects
What do insect pollinated plants have?
Large coloured petals and nectar to attract insects
Large pollen grains that can stick to an insect’s body
Anthers and stigmas inside the flower, so that insects can brush against them when it’s drinking nectar
What can wind carry from flower to flower?
Pollen
Do wind pollinated flowers have large scented petals?
No, because they don’t need to attract insects
what do wind pollinated flowers have?
Anthers that hang outside the flower to catch the wind
Large amounts of light, small pollen grains that can catch the wind
Spreading, feathery stigmas to catch the pollen grains
What is the next step after a pollen grain lands on a stigma
Fertilisation.
When does fertilisation happen
When a male sex cell joins up with a female sex cell
What grows out of a pollen grain during fertilisation?
A tube. It grows towards the female sex cell. A male sex cell moves down the tube
What happens when the tube enters the female sex cell?
The tip of the tube bursts open, male sex cell joins up with the female sex cell. The ovule then becomes a seed. The ovule becomes a fruit with the seed inside it. The petals die and drop off
Where are a plant’s sex organs?
In its flowers
