Flow of energy Flashcards
Ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Producer
Plants. One example of producers found in food chains is plants. They use photosynthesis to make their own food.
Consumer
Consumer: is an organism that feeds on plants or other animals for energy.
Decomposer
Decomposer: is an organism, usually a bacterium or fungus, that breaks down the cells of dead plants and animals into simpler substances.
Food Chain
Food chain, in ecology, the sequence of transfers of matter and energy in the form of food from organism to organism.
Food Web
A food web is a detailed interconnecting diagram that shows the overall food relationships between organisms in a particular environment.
Photosynthesis
the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct.
Cellular Respiration
cellular respiration The process of cell catabolism in which cells turn food into usable energy in the form of ATP.
