Flow of Energy Flashcards
Food Chain
Shows the movement of energy from one organism to another
Food Web
Links all food chains in an ecosystem together
Herbivore
Obtains energy by eating plants
Carnivore
Obtains energy by eating other animals
Omnivore
Obtains energy by eating producers and other consumers
Producer
Organisms that can produce its own food/energy
Consumer
An organism that obtains food by feeding on other organisms
Trophic Level
Levels of a food chain or web
Decomposer
Detritivores that break down matter into simpler compounds
Primary Consumer
organism that feeds on primary producers
Secondary Consumer
organism that feeds on the primary consumer
Tertiary Consumer
Organism that feeds on the secondary consumer
Quaternary Consumer
Organism that feeds on the tertiary consumer(no natural predators)
Ecological Pyramid
graphical representation of the relationship between different organisms in an ecosystem
Energy Pyramid
graphical representation, showing the flow of energy at each trophic level in an ecosystem
Pyramid of numbers
shows the number of organisms at each trophic level in an ecosystem
Biomass
the total quantity or weight of organisms in a given area or volume
Biomass pyramid
graphical representation of biomass present in a unit area of various trophic levels
10% rule
Only 10% of energy is transferred to the next trophic level 90% is lost through heat
Germination
refers the start of growth of a plant from a seed.
Seedling Formation
Process which a fragile plant grows from a germinated seed, towards the sunlight
Growth and Development
Establishing the seedling’s ability to photosynthesize and grow independently
Differentiation
The plant develops cells tissues and organs that aid reproduction and growth.
Pollination
Where pollen from the anther (male part) is transferred to the stigma (female part)
Occurs through wind, water, insects, other animals
