Powers that go to the states but are not rewritten out.
- Control public education
- Conduct elections
- Make marriage laws
In what ways are Florida’s Constitution and the US Constitution different? Similar?
There are more articles in the Florida Constitution and, the US Constitution is the highest law of the nation while the Florida Constitution is the highest law of the state. But, the governments are structured almost the same exact way and the preamble is almost the same.
What are concurrent powers? (Give three examples)
Powers shared by state and national governments.
- Levy taxes
- Borrow money
- Maintain law and order
What are expressed powers? (Give three powers)
Powers specifically listed in the constitution.
- Coin money
- Declare war
- Establish courts.
What services does the local level of government provide?
- Fire Department
- Police Department
- Libraries
- Garbage
- Recycling
- Water and Sewer
- Public Education
- Many, many more.
Who is in charge of the executive branch at the state level?
The governor, Rick Scott.
How many Supreme Court Justices are at the state level?
7 justices.
How is Florida’s government organized?
Into three branches, judicial, executive and legislative. It has a bicameral legislature, like the national government and a court system arranged just like the national government.
What is federalism?
When national and state governments share power.
What are the three types of ways a city government can be organized?
- Mayor-Council Form
- Council-Manager Form
- Commission Form
What is an ordinance?
A city or local government law/rule.
What is a line-item-veto?
When the president only vetoes part of a bill.
What is a city council?
A body of people having legislative and administrative powers in a city.
