What are flood defences?
Wash lands, Dams, Flood walls, Storage, Afforestation, Embankments.
Which course is the most likely to be flooded?
Lower course because there is more water and it flows faster.
What are some long term problems?
Death, Houses destroyed, Bridges collapse, Lots of repairs needed, small shops/businesses ruined.
What are some short term problems?
Rubble on streets,
Crops ruined,
Dangerous for pedestrians,
Some find it hard to get around.
Where does it happen?
Near lakes, rivers and oceans.
Why was the Cockermouth flood so bad?
Because there were two rivers instead of just one. River cocker and river derwent.
When did the Cockermouth flood happen?
2009 and 2015.
What is hard and soft engineering?
Hard engineering is when man made things are built near the river. Soft engineering is when the river uses natural processes and a more gentle approach.
What causes a flood?
When there is too much precipitation and the rivers carry to much water.
