What are floods?
FLoods are overflows of large amounts of water onto land that is normally dry
What is the positive impact of floods?
It supports the cultivation of crops
What is the negative impact of floods?
When floods affect people’s lives by destroying properties and causing loss of lives
What are the types of floods?
Coastal, River and Flash floods
Where do coastal floods occur?
They occur in coastal areas, especially in low-lying areas.
How are coastal floods caused?
Coastal floods are caused by intense storms which are found in tropical oceans, which lead to storm surges.
What are storm surges?
Strong winds that bring large waves which cause water levels to rise and cause coastal floods.
What are river floods?
When the water in rivers rises and overflows its banks
Where do river floods occur?
they take place on floodplains which consists of a river and the low-lying land on either side of it. The raised banks on both sides of the rivers are called natural levees
How do river floods occur?
Due to snowmelt, heavy rainfall and failure of man-made structures such as dams, floodwalls and levees.
What are flash floods?
they are floods that occur suddenly and lasts for a short period of time.
How do flash floods occur?
It is caused by heavy rainfall. It can also be caused by coastal or river floods
