After there has been lots of heavy rain.
How do things in the environment help to cause floods?
Steep slopes cause water to run of the land quickly
If fires destroyed the vegetation, water flows quickly into rivers off the bare ground.
Long period of rain full up dams and rivers.
Animals that have eaten all the grass.
How do people cause floods.
Building dams which fill up and flood the lands
Farmers remove or burn natural veg. To make fields, causing water to flow quickly off bare ground.
In cities water flows very quickly off streets and buildings.

What are the effects of floods on people.
Drown and get injured.
Floods can destroy crops and animals resulting in food shortages.
Wash away soil making the land infertile and bad for farming this is called soil erosion
Destroying buildings and property
Wash away sewage out of the sewage works and polluting food

Why are some communities at higher risk than others
They use rivers for drinking washing and cooking the land next to the rivers is flat and easy to build on they need water to keep this soil fertile and make the crops grow.

How would you reduce the impact of floods
Build settlements away from riverbanks.
Improve drainage in settlements so that water can flow away quickly.
Teach people about the dangers of flooding.
Make laws to prevent people from living in high-risk flood areas.
Use lakes natural vegetation and wetlands to prevent water from flooding quickly into rivers.
