Flight Performance & Planning Flashcards
What does a normal category on a Mass & Balance Chart imply?
Normal flying. No Spinning or aerobatic manoeuvres an bank angle restricted to 60 degrees.
What are Vlo, Vle, Vfe and Vno?
Vlo - Max Speed for gear operation
Vle - Max speed with gear extended
Vfe - Max speed for full flap
Vno - Max structural smooth air cruising speed
What is denser humid air or dry air?
Dry Air. Since water vapour is less dense than air.
What are the two steps involved in calculating Density Altitude?
Correct current altitude for differences to ISA Pressure to gain ‘Pressure Altitude’
Correct ‘Pressure Altitude’ for differences to ISA Temperature
Then you have density altitude.
Describe best rate of climb
Vy
The best altitude gained per unit of time
Describe best angle of climb
Vx
The highest angle of climb. Enabling highest altitude in shortest distance
What happens to performance if the CoG is forward?
Performance is reduced
A forward CofG requires more down-force from the tail plane ot raise the nose, adding weight to the aircraft. The high AoA required also increases drag.
Define Vmc
The minimum control speed for twin engine aircraft
Define Vref
The reference landing speed that is used at the 50ft obstacle barrier height
Define Vat
Approach Threshold Speed, equivalent to the stall speed x 1.3
For Private Flying what are the final fuel reserves?
The amount of fuel you MUST have remaining in the tank after landing is 30 minutes (Day) or 45 minutes (night/IFR)
What is private flying best practice for fuel?
Route (Cruise)
5% Route Contingency
Diversion
Final Reserve (30/45)
Takeoff Climb, Descent, Land Taxi (Equiv of 15 minutes of cruise fuel)
