Flight Flashcards
Aerodynamic
Something that moves smoothly through the air, disturbing it as little as possible, often shaped like a cigar
Turbulence
“Bumpy” air- as a result of something NOT cutting smoothly through the air.
Lighter than air
Aircraft that use air (or gas) to float in the air
Heavier than air
Aircraft that finds ways to push air downwards
Thrust
Force that pushed an object forward
Drag
Force that pulls an object backwards
Lift
Force that is pushing an object up
Gravity
Force that pulls object down
Newton’s third law
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Fluid
A substance that flows
Volume
The amount of space something takes up
Density
The measurement of how closely packed together molecules are in a given space
Relative density
The comparison of the density of two different spaces with the same volume
Hot air balloon
LTA flying machine that rises due to buoyancy of hot air
Envelope
What the balloon is called on a hot air balloon
Gore
One of the panels on a hot air balloon
Parachute valve
Flap at the top of envelope that lets out hot air
Skirt
Fabric at bottom of enevelope that acts as a stovetop
Fuselage
The body of the airplane
Aileron
“Flaps” on the main wing
Elevator
“Flaps” on the tail wing
Airfoil
The shape of an airplane wing that makes air travel faster over the top then the bottom
Vertical stablizer
“Wing” that stands up at the back of the plane
Rudder
“Flap” on the vertical stablizer
Aerodynamic
A smooth, narrow shape that cuts through the air
Pitch
“Dive” or “climb” or the “nodding your head” motion in a plane
Yaw
The “shaking your head no” motion in a plane
Roll
Spinning around the horizontal axis motion in a plane
