Nasal bot fly.
Sprays larvae into the nasal openings.
Can make way through the frontal sinus to the brain and causes gid.
How does gasterophilus spp. cause disease in horses?
Eggs are laid on the horses legs and licked off.
Lifestages are then carried out in the gastric mucosa.
Can cause obstruction.
How does hypoderma spp. cause disease in cattle?
Warble fly
No mouth parts
Only hatch and release eggs, which burrow into the skin.
What is the fly of veterinary importance within the calliphagidae family?
Lucilia sericata
What disease is caused in sheep by lucilia sericata?
Fly strike.
This can be prevented by daily inspection.
What predisposes rabbits to infection by lucilia sericata?
Diet - starch rich diet can increase diarrhoea.
Grooming - can make faecal soiling more likely.
