What was labour like in rural areas pre-market revolution?
- labouring primarily for subsistence
- household more often a small farm
- women and children involved with family farming
What was labour like in urban areas pre-market revolution
- home was extended into the artisanal workshop
- workshops had a strict hierarchy
- master craftsman;s wife and daughters might see to feeding and clothing workshop artisans
What did metropolitan industrialisation lead to?
- apprenticeship system no longer profitable
- increase in small factories, hired temporary employees
- this sped up production but meant no. of men didn’t have a way of rising through ranks, could only stay as wage workers
- women no longer involved
How did industrialisation impact democracy?
wage earning men challenged idea that property ownership and economic independence were a prerequisite for political rights this class of w/c men argued they owned their own labour and that this ownership entitled them t full rights of citizenship
How did communication and transportation revolutionise?
More canals and railroads, easier to get goods among places
e.g. Erie Cana in Upper New York - now a transport link between Midwest and North

by the 1840s used to describe Go-given fate to expand west
