Why did some northern states abolish slavery during the Revolution? (3)
- African American efforts to bring court cases e.g. Massachusetts
- weren’t as economically dependent on it
- some saw contradictions in fighting for liberty against British yet enslaving people at home

What did the gradual emancipation act do?
- prohibited further importation of slaves into the state
- those enslaved in PA before the law went into effect remained enslaved for life

US appeared able to meet domestic needs for slaves , no need to import
Why did the end to the international slave trade benefit slave holders?
- made current slaves roe valuable
- increased prices fo their slaves which made them wealthier
- imported slaves are more likely to rebel
When was the invention of the cotton gin? What did it lead to (2) ?

- led to 50-fold increase in output of cotton in US, much more profitable
- leads to increase in slavery as South becomes world leader of producing cotton which is all being grown by slaves

Why does the St Domingue uprising matter to Americans?
- French in debt so negotiate Louisiana Purchase
- makes US one of the largest nations in the world (doubles in size)
- slave owners increasingly move west to establish plantations, slavery booming west
What is the Louisiana Purchase?
1803 Napoleon agrees to sell area west of Mississippi River to the USA for $15 mil
What is the impact of the growing internal slave trade of slave families?
children taken from parents, families couples etc separated
3/4 of all slaves sold as individuals
What does Jefferson believe?
- rural independence - idealised self-sufficiency
- thinks Louisiana purchase will help strengthen this ideal
