Flammable And Other Hazardous Characterisitics Flashcards
What is the fire triangle
Fuel+oxygen+ energy all need to be present for a fire
Oxygen can be bound in the fuel e.g: ammonium nitrate
What are flammable limits
For a fuel to combust it’s % by volume of air must fall in a specific range before it combusts
What is flash point
The lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to form a flammable mixture with air.
How do you carry out the flash point experiment and what can it tell us
Occasionally bring an ignition source near the vapour and when there is a flash you report that flash point temperature
What is the auto ignition temperature
The temperature at which a vapour will have so much kinetic energy that it spontaneously ignites
What are some other hazardous characteristics
Highly volatile materials stored as liquid under pressure
Highly toxic materials
Corrosive materials
Materials with potential long term health impact
Highly reactive materials
Very hot materials.
