Q

Why do colours show when a metal burns

A

Because when the atoms are heated and absorb energy the electrons are excited and are able to move from their ground state to higher energy levels. As they return to their ground state they emit light of a specific energy which corresponds to particular wavelengths of visible light if in visible light range of electromagnetic spectrum and so produces different colours.
