Analysis Of Inorganic Compounds Flashcards

1
Q

How to test for carbonate ions (CO3,2-)

A

Add a few drops of hydrochloric acid and bubble this through limewater(sodium hydroxide), carbonate present if limewater turns cloudy(sodium carbonate produced)

Q

How to test for hydrogencarbonates (HCO3)

A

Add solution containing magnesium ions eg magnesium sulfate, carbonate will produce precipitate(magnesium carbonate) while hydrogencarbonate will not

Q

How to test for sulfate ions (SO4,2-)

A

Add a few drops of hydrochloric acid to the solution and then a few drops of barium chloride, if sulfate ions present white precipitate of barium sulphate will form which is insoluble

Q

Why add a few drops of hydrochloric acid before testing for sulphate ions

A

To get rid of any carbonates which would also produce a white precipitate

Q

How to test for ammonium salts

A

Mix the unknown solution with warm, dilute sodium hydroxide which if ammonium salts present will produce ammonia which will turn damp red litmus paper blue
