Flambourgh Head Flashcards
Location?
Along Yorkshire Coast of England.
Jutting into the North Sea from the east coast of England.
What is the main reason for the formation of the headland?
Made up off chalk a resistant sedimentary rock.
Describe the structure of chalk?
Distinctive white colour.
Layers of chalk clearly visible and roughly horizontal.
Vertical cracks run through chalk - joints.
What are joints?
Weaknesses in the chalk, readily exploited by the processes of weathering and erosion .
Give an example of a major faultline?
Selwick’s bay.
What is the sea doing to Flamborough Head?
Eroding and undercutting the base of the cliffs leading to regular rock falls .
Over time cliff retreats forming wave cut platforms and stacks.
How do the waves approach the coastline?
They become refracted by the shape of the coast.
Waves curve and have low energy in the bay - deposited beach.
Headlands bear full force of incoming waves.
