What are the Five Pillars of Islam?
Shahadah

What is Shahadah?
Declaration of faith. It is in the adhan (call to prayer) and is also known as the Kalimah prayer which is the first and last thing a person hears in their lifetime.
What is Salah?
Means prayer in Arabic. Bowing or worship. There are over 700 verses in the Qur’an that mention it. Praying 5 times a day but 6 on a Friday.
What is Zakah?
Means to purify or cleanse. It is a duty performed regularly and is not charity. Contribute 2.5% of savings to charities. It is to cleanse money and possessions from excessive desire and greed. Given after Ramadan. Paid in secret.
What is Sawm?
Fasting during Ramadan. Takes place in the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. They follow the lunar calendar which is 354 days.
What is Hajj?
Pilgrimage to Mecca that every able bodied Muslim should make at least once in their lifetime. Everybody wears white to be equal.
What is Kuhms?
Muslims give 20% of their savings should be given to the state of Islam.
What is Niyyah?
Having the right intention to worship God.
What is the meaning of the Five Pillars?
They are five basic acts which are considered compulsory by Muslims as they are seen as a commitment to the faith.
