What is Id-ul-Adha?
The festival of sacrifice performed during Hajj and across the world. A lamb is sacrificed and divided up into three portions. Portion 1 is for the family. Portion 2 is for friends and relatives. portion 3 is for the poor and needy. The celebration is major for Muslims and lasts up to 3 days and is a holiday in Muslim countries.
What does it demonstrate?
Willingness to make sacrifices to Allah. It is also a sign of support for those at Hajj.
What is said when the animal is sacrificed?
‘In the name of God, God is the greatest’ in Arabic.
What is Id-ul-Fitr?
Also known as Eid. It is a festival that signifies the end of Ramadan and lasts for 3 days. It begins on the first day of Shawwal (10th month of the Islamic calendar).
What happens before Id prayers are given?
Muslims give Sadaqat-al-Fitr which is a special charity to atone for any mistakes made during Ramadan.
What happens at the sight of a new moon?
In Muslim countries a cannon is fired but in other countries it is broadcast on TV or radio.
What else will Muslims do to celebrate Id?
They visit cemeteries to remember those who have been separated by death.
What is Id-ul-Ghadeer and who celebrates it?
it is the day of Muhammad’s last sermon and is celebrated by Shi’a muslims.
When does the festival take place?
The 18th of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hajjah.
Whatb do Shi’a muslims believe happened at this sermon?
They believe Ali was named Muhammad’s successor and the Verse of Announcement was revealed to him.
Where did the sermon take place?
It took place in Ghadir Khumm whilst on his way to Medinah.
