What is the GPhC
is the regulator for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and registered pharmacy premises in England, Scotland and Wales.
why is GPHC relevant?
- registered HCP, carries privileges and responsibilities and as pharmacy students, we must demonstrate we’re able to exercise them appropriately
- conduct professional at all times
What are the standards of pharmacy professionals about?
- describe how safe and effective care is delivered through persons entered professionalism
- what to expect from pharmacy professionals and what GPHC is expecting
- explain knowledge attitudes and behaviours that will be expected when they apply to register
Nine standards of Pharmacy Professionals
1) provide person centred care
2) work in partnership with others
3) communicate effectively
4) maintain, develop and use their professional knowledge and skills
5) use professional judgement
6) behave in professional manner
7) respect and maintain the persons confidentiality and privacy
8) speak up when they have concerns or when things go wrong
9) demonstrate leadership

- obtain consent to provide care and pharmacy services
- involve, support and enable every person when making decisions about their health and wellbeing
- listen to patients needs and understand what matters to them
- give personal all relevant info so they can make their own informed decisions
- respect and safeguard a persons dignity
- recognise and value diversity and respecting cultural differences
- recognise that your own values and beliefs do not impose them on other people and make sure that person-centred care approach isn’t affected because of this
- make the best use of the resources available
Work in partnership with others
- work with the person receiving care
- Identify and work with the individuals and teams who are involved in the person’s care
- contact involve and work with relevant local and national organisations
- demonstrate effective team working
- adapt their communication to bring about effective partnership working
- Take action to safeguard people, particularly children and vulnerable adults
- Make and use records of the care provided
- Work with others to make sure there is continuity of care for the person concerned
Communicate effectively
- Adapt their communication to meet the needs of the person they are communicating with
- overcome barriers to communication
- ask questions and listen carefully to responses
- come to a shared deacon about care they provide
- check person has understood info they’ve been given
Maintain, develop and use their professional knowledge and skills

How to use professional judgement
- Make person first concern and act in their best interest
- Have info they need to provide appropriate care
- Declare any personal or professional interests and manage these professionally
- Recognise limits of their competence
How to behave in a professional manner
- Polite and considerate
- Trustworthy and act with honesty and integrity
- Show empathy and compassion

How to respect and maintain the person’s confidentiality and privacy?
- understand importance of managing info responsibly and securely and apply to practice
- Dont discuss info that can identify a person so other people can overhear
- Ensure everyone in the team knows how to maintain privacy
How to speak up when they have concerns or when things go wrong?
- Promote and encourage a culture of leaning and improvement
- Challenge poor practice and behaviours
- Raise a cancer, even when its tough
- Be open and honest when things go wrong
Examples of when a pharmacy professional has to speak up when things go wrong
- Criminal activity
- Malpracitce
- Failure to observe legal obligation
- Threat to health or safety
- Bribes
How to demonstrate leadership?
- Take responsibility for their practice and demonstrate leadership to the people they work with
- Contribute to the education, training and development of the team
- Delegate tasks to people who are competent and appropriately trained
- Do not abuse position
Issues for the positive CRB disclosure panel?
- Establish facts and circumstances surrounding the offence
- Establish students response
- Consider offence in terms of nature and severity
- See likelihood of recurrence
- consider impact of conviction in professional practice
- Decide upon appropriate outcome in terms of consideration for an offer
