List some effective ways for fitness leaders to communicate
- introduce yourself and let participants know your credentials
- speak clearly and project your voice so your audience can hear you
- connect with your participants: smile, face them and make eye contact
- go over the fitness program outline, explain the benefits of the fitness program and which body parts you will be working
- listen
- respond positively, not defensively
- provide clear and concise direction
- wear appropriate clothing and shoes suited to the fitness program
- break down each exercise to make them easier to understand
- do not give medical advice
- have fun
What are some of the characteristics of adult learners?
- adults are independent (actively involve adult participants in the program process)
- adults are goal-oriented (they appreciate a fitness program that is clearly defined, organized, safe and enjoyable)
- adults are practical (inform adult participants how the fitness program will contribute to overall health, as well as their fitness goals)
- adults need to be shown respect (all participants should be treated as equals and allowed to voice their opinions)
What are the four critical elements of learning?
- motivation (necessary to keep the participants interested and committed)
- reinforcement (encouraging the participants in a positive manner)
- retention (occurs when one practices until the new skill is learned)
- transference (the ability to use the new skills in different settings)
What are some intrinsic reasons for participants to stick with a fitness program?
- how exercise makes them feel about themselves and their bodies
- the gratification of achieving personal fitness goals
- the pleasure of having a great workout and learning new things
- the satisfaction of looking and feeling good
- self-concept and awareness
- builds self-confidence and contributes to personal advancement

What are some extrinsic reasons for participants to stick with a fitness program?

Describe some ways a fitness leader can motivate participants
- set a feeling or tone for the exercise session
- set an appropriate level of difficulty
- initiate goal-setting through conversation and questionnaires to find out: why they joined a fitness program, what they expect from the fitness program, what their major interests are, what their goals are for the future
