aerobic capacity
The ability of the heart, blood vessels and respiratory systems to supply nutrients and oxygenated blood to the muscles and the ability of the muscles to use the oxygen for sustained exercise.
sports example - Marathons, afl midfielders
fitness test - 20m shuttle run
anaerobic capacity
The ability of the body to produce energy without using oxygen.
sports example - shot-put, high jump, long jump
fitness test - Phosphate recovery test, 300m Shuttle run
body composition
Proportion of bone, muscle and fat in an athlete.
sports example - BMI, skinfolds
fitness test - BMI, skinfolds
muscular strength
The force a muscle or muscle group can exert against a resistance in one maximal contraction (1RM).
sports example - Weight lifting, tackling a player to the ground in football
fitness test - Handgrip Dynamometer test, 1RM Bench press test
muscular endurance
The ability of a muscle, or common group of muscle, to continue sustained contractions in the face of fatigue.
sports example - Last few push-ups while experiencing fatigue during a 60 sec push up test
fitness test - Timed sit-ups test, timed push-ups test
flexibility
Is the capacity of a joint to move through its full range of motion, and reflects the ability of the muscles and connective tissues to stretch.
sports example - splits, dancing
fitness test - Modified sit & reach test
balance
The ability to maintain symmetry while stationary or moving
sports experiment - Held position on a balance beam or parallel bars
