- Cognitive and hypothesis techniques produced significantly more correct items than the standard interview. held true with analysis of critical facts rather than subject’s responses.
- No significant difference between cognitive and hypothesis techniques.
- Cognitive interview is longer
- Cognitive and hypothesis techniques asked less questions than the standard, but got more correct answers, therefore more efficient way of obtaining accurate data.
- Males significantly more incorrect than females.
- Useful as suggested these techniques may be specifically helpful when dealing with incident where there is a lot happening at once.
Aim
Aim: Eyewitness memory enhancement in the police interview. Cognitive retrieval of memories compared to hypnosis.
Background
Eyewitness testimonies are incomplete, partially reconstructed and affected by questioning.
Hypnosis - some states do not allowed evidence obtained under hypnosis in court. Evidence may be mixed but useful for traumatised witnesses.

Procedure
INTERVIEWERS
17 police officers/CI investigators = allocated to one of three interview techniques.
SUBJECTS
89 undergraduates = saw one of 4 LAPD realistic films including at least one fatal shooting. Randomly assigned to one of 3 interviewing techniques after 48 hours of viewing and individually interviewed. Interviews recorded and transcribed.
