Fish Flashcards

What items are required for an aquarium?

Lighting
Heating
Filtration

What factors should be considered in choosing a light for your tank?

Temperature and brightness

What are some types of lighting in fish tanks?

Fluorescent - can promote algae growth
Incandescent - not recommended
LED - best choice - energy efficient

What species of fish do not need a heat source?

goldfish

What is the appropriate water temp for most fish that require a heat source?

78-80 F

Describe mechanical filtration

water passes through a screen or sponge
removes debris
EX: under-gravel filters

Describe chemical filtration

Removes yellow color from water wia activated carbon or Zeolite
EX;

Describe biological filtration

natural organisms that break down harmful substances in water like ammonia and nirites
EX: Plants, bacteria, algae

Explain the nitrogen cycle

Fish and decomposing material make ammonia

Nitrosomas turn ammonium to nitrites

Nitrospira turn nitrites to nitrates

Nitrites stay int he thank until the water is changed

What are 7 stresses that cause disease in fish
- breeding
- amount of space
- nitrogen levels
- minerals (hard water)
- pH
- salt
- temp
What would indicate a sick fish?
- clamped fins
- head standing
- tail standing
- lethargy
- listing
- scales pointing out
- red sores
- white sores or spots
What is the cause and treatment of ick?
caused by protozoa and causes white spots on fish
treat entire tank with more salt or add medication
- malachite green
What is the cause and treatment of fin rot?
Caused by bacteria
treat with anti-bacterial medication
What type of protein sources should be used in fish foods? Why is this important?
Fish meal or other seafood products because they provide long chain fatty acids
Why can’t you use city water directly in your tank?
there is a high mineral content
