Types of thermodynamic systems

A
  1. Isolated: do not exchange matter and energy with the environment
  2. Closed: exchange energy but do not exchange matter
  3. Open: exchange both matter and energy with the environment

Types of thermodynamic variables

A
  1. Extensive variables: characterize the system as a whole (directly prop to the amount of substance on system) and can be calculated as the sum of values of the variable for the separate subsystems that compose the system e.g. mass, vol, energy, enthalpy, entropy
  2. Intensive variables: may have diff values at diff points in the system and do not depend on the amount of substance in the system and cannot be summed e.g. temp, density

Types of thermodynamic states

A
  1. Equilibrium state:
    - all thermodynamic variables of system remain constant over time
    - have same values at all points in the system
  2. Non-equilibrium state:
    - variables have diff values at diff points in system
    - variables change over time

Graphic representation of thermodynamic states

A
  • GRAPH*
  • eqbm states can be represented by point on a pressure-vol diagram
  • non-eqbm states can not be represented on a pressure-vol diagram

Equation of state

A

Equation of state = a relationship between the variables of the equilibrium state, describing the properties of the system: f(p,V,T,n) = 0
