First Principle Of Thermodynamics Flashcards
Subject thermodynamics
Thermodynamics = studies the conversions of energy exchanged between systems as heat and work
Basic thermodynamic terms
Thermodynamic bodies and systems - definitions
Thermodynamic body = a very large ensemble of particles
Thermodynamic system = a set of thermodynamic bodies exchanging energy
Basic thermodynamic terms
Types of thermodynamic systems
- Isolated: do not exchange matter and energy with the environment
- Closed: exchange energy but do not exchange matter
- Open: exchange both matter and energy with the environment
Basic thermodynamic terms
Thermodynamic variables - definition
Thermodynamic variables = properties characterizing the thermodynamic systems e.g. mass, volume, pressure
Basic thermodynamic terms
Types of thermodynamic variables
- Extensive variables: characterize the system as a whole (directly prop to the amount of substance on system) and can be calculated as the sum of values of the variable for the separate subsystems that compose the system e.g. mass, vol, energy, enthalpy, entropy
- Intensive variables: may have diff values at diff points in the system and do not depend on the amount of substance in the system and cannot be summed e.g. temp, density
Basic thermodynamic terms
Thermodynamic state - definition
Thermodynamic state = the set of instantaneous values of the thermodynamic variables of a system
Basic thermodynamic terms
Types of thermodynamic states
- Equilibrium state:
- all thermodynamic variables of system remain constant over time
- have same values at all points in the system - Non-equilibrium state:
- variables have diff values at diff points in system
- variables change over time
Basic thermodynamic terms
Graphic representation of thermodynamic states
- GRAPH*
- eqbm states can be represented by point on a pressure-vol diagram
- non-eqbm states can not be represented on a pressure-vol diagram
Basic thermodynamic terms
Equation of state
Equation of state = a relationship between the variables of the equilibrium state, describing the properties of the system: f(p,V,T,n) = 0
Basic thermodynamic terms
Thermodynamic process - definition
Thermodynamic process = the transition of a thermodynamic system from one state to another
Basic thermodynamic terms
Types of thermodynamic processes
