First Lab Flashcards
Body Regions
anatomical position
facing forward, standing straight, palms facing forward; universally accepted
superior (cranial)
closer to the head; opposite of inferior
inferior (caudal)
closer to the feet; opposite of superior
anterior (ventral)
closer to the front; opposite of posterior
posterior (dorsal)
closer to the back; opposite of anterior
medial
closer to the midline; opposite of lateral
lateral
farther from the midline; opposite of medial
intermediate
between a more medial and more lateral structure
proximal
closer to the trunk; opposite of distal
distal
farther from the trunk; opposite of proximal
superficial (external)
closer to or on the surface; opposite of deep
deep (internal)
farther from the surface
parietal
pertaining to the wall of a body cavity
visceral
pertaining to the covering of an organ
ipsilateral
on the same side of the body; opposite of contralateral
contralateral
on the opposite side of the body; opposite of ipsilateral
frontal (coronal) planes
vertical planes that pass longitudinally through the body from left to right; divide body into anterior and posterior; form a frontal sections
transverse (horizontal) planes
divide body into superior and inferior; forms transverse (cross) sections
sagittal planes
vertical planes that pass longitudinally through the body from anterior to posterior; divide the body into left and right; two types: midsagittal planes and parasagittal planes
midsagittal planes
pass through midline; divide body into equal left and right parts
parasagittal planes
run parallel to median plane; divide body into unequal left and right parts
three types of sections
longitudinal, oblique, and cross
