First Ionisation Energy Flashcards
Definition of first ionisation energy
Energy need to remove one mole of electron from one mole of gaseous atom
Factors affecting ionisation energy
- nuclear charge
- atomic radius
- shielding
Tend in ionisation energy moving across a period
Ionisation energies increase, this because it is easy to remove the outer most electron.
ionisation energy down a group trend factors
Increase in shielding
Decrease in nuclear charge
Increase in atomic radius
Trend of ionisation energy down a group
usually ionisation energy falls down a group as it gets easier to lose electrons as they get further away from the nucleus
Shielding definition
It is the distance between the outer most electron and the nucleus. The lesser the shielding, the stronger the force between the outer most electron and the nucleus
Atomic Charge Definition
Electrons closer to the nucleus will be more strongly attracted to the nucleus that one that is further away.
Nuclear Charge definition
larger number of protons = higher the positive charge of the nucleus meaning the higher the attraction of the electrons
