First Floor Debtor's Flashcards
This is…
debtors tower. As you can probably guess, by the name, this is where we kept our inmates who owed money. You can see the room is divided into different segments
These would have…
formed cells, which would have been the prisoners’ home until their debt was repaid, so not much privacy for these prisoners. They could repay this debt through working in the prison workshop, being allowed out into the city to work, politely requesting that a family member cover the debt for you, or, worse-comes-to-worse simply begging for charity from passers-by
Basically debtors tower was…
Oxford’s debtors’ prison. These cells were eventually left to rot when the prison was disbanded in 1996. A decade later, the castle and prison was revamped into a tourist attraction, the Oxford Castle and Prison Experience. Now I hope that you have enjoyed your experience travelling around the majestic sights of the castle
Debtors Tower is now…
the beginning of our Exhibition. You can follow the timeline from the very birth of Oxford right through to the destruction of the castle. The rest of the exhibition is through this door in Oxford Prison’s hospital wing. Inside, there are several types of hard labour for you to try out, just like the prisoners used to
You can even visit our…
padded cell, that housed Oxford’s most notorious and famous prisoner Donald Neilson. Be warned that an ominous man appears in there and provides a bit of a scare. Frightening for you and frightening for us in the staff room hearing your screams too. To find your way out head down the stairs at the end of the corridor and take the door to your right
Also, if you are…
interested then you can fill out the post visit survey sent out to your email or leave a review on TripAdvisor to vent your frustrations about my terrible sense of humour. So, if you have enjoyed the tour today my name’s been Tommy, and if you haven’t I was a ghost and you never saw me. Enjoy the rest of your day here at Oxford Castle and Prison
