Ways of knowing:
Religion, direct knowledge, conventional wisdom and of course- Sociology
The key to thinking sociologically:
Context
Ways to look at either groups or individuals
Macro and micro level.
All sociological inquiry is based on understanding and explaining:
The patterns that underlie social life.
An assumption that is fundamental to a sociological perspective:
All human life is social(human life is social life)
Seeing the general in the particular:
is to analyze the event or social behavior using ‘social categories or concepts’ that reflect established social patterns.
For example: social class, gender, race/ethnicity, age, education/occupation, sexual orientation
Founding Fathers of sociology and the honorable mentions.
Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkhim.
Harriet Martineau and Du bois

what is going on here, besides what appears to be obvious?
Seeing the strange in the familiar revolves around:
Context as stuff out of context is weird.
Taken for granted world:
The world as we know it that we don’t really question.
The sociological imagination( C. Wirght Mills) is:
- about recognizing the pervasiveness of social influences in understanding human behavior and social problems
- Seeing that our lives are shaped in great part by ‘social forces’
- This ‘quality of mind’ is a way of thinking that situates individual lives in broader ‘contexts
Social imagination makes a link between
Personal troubles and global issues. (The whole job and not having a job example)
Social structure/social order:
Refers to the enduring, orderly and patterned relationships between elements of a society.
Social Change:
Social conscious activity and action can alter and transform social structures
- it is also inevitable
