What were the pros of the peoples crusade?
Force was effective. Shows success appeal.
Who was Alexius I?
Byzantine Emperor from 1081 to 1118, when he died 15th August.
What was the aims of Alexius I for the first crusade?
Hope he might persuade the individual leaders to swear fealty to him. Gain more control.
How well did Alexius I achive his aims?
Managed to get princes to swear oath of allegiance to him, successfully.
Who was Adhémar Bishop of Le Puy?
Appointed offical Papal Legate for first. Not an experienced fighter but experienced negotiator. Known to Pope and high in church (Bishop).

1041/2-1105
Friend of Adhemar, first noblemen to join Crusade which led him to expect to be leader. Showed commitment to Crusade by handing possessions to monasteries.
Who was Bohemund of Taranto?
1154-1111.
Son of Robert Guiscard, norman conquer of Southern Italy. Experienced soldier. Left landlessness after death of father in 1085. Alexius I suspicious of him. Not believed to crusade for religious reasoning.

Bohemunds nephew. One of the many norman nights who followed Bohemund. Powerful and energetic fighter.

A younger brother, had no great experience of war. Intended to return home, shown by documents.

1058-1118
Godfrey’s younger brother. Joined crusade last minute. Future king of Jerusalem.

Brother of French king (Phillip I)
Didn’t have extensive land and had small force. Excommunicated after bigamous marriage.
Who was Robert of Normandy?
1051-1134
Eldest son of William of Normandy. Sent 500 knights to help in defence of Byzantine.

1st July 1097, Turkish forces was left by Kilij Arslan. Bohemond, Godfrey, Ahdemar. Crusader victory.
What was Antioch?
A major city in Outremer, in muslim hands since 1085 when it was captured from Byzantine empire.
