What is care under fire?
- Return fire before providing first aid
- Determine if the casualty is alive or dead
- Provide care to the living casualty, direct them to return fire, move to cover, administer first aid - if they can
- Check for massive hemorrhage, apply TQ using the casualty’s IFAK
- Move the casualty when the tactical situation permits
- Reassess TQ
When do you apply tactical field care?
Once under cover and not under hostile fire
What are the steps to Tactical Field Care?
Ask "Are you ok" Use AVPU to determine if the casualty is: A - Alert V - Verbally responsive P - Responds to pain U - Unresponsive
When do you initiate tactical evacuation?
Once the casualty is provided appropriate first aid
What are the two ways to open an airway?
- Head tilt, chin lift method
2. Jaw-thrust method
Describe the head tilt chin lift method!
- Kneel next to the casualty
- Place your hand on the forehead, apply firm, backward pressure to tilt the head
- Place fingertips on the bony part of the jaw to lift the jaw forward, do not close the mouth completely
Describe the jaw thrust method!
- Kneel above the casualty’s head
- Rest your elbows on the ground
- Place one hand on each side of the casualty’s lower jaw, below the ears
- Stabilize the head with the forearms
- Use the index finger to push the angles of the lower jaw forward.
While maintaining the open airway, what are performance measures to ensure the casualty is breathing?
- Look for chest to rise and fall
- Listen for air escaping
- Feel the flow of the air at the face
- Count the number of respirations for 15 sec
What are the three methods of controlling bleeding?
- Direct pressure
- Pressure dressing
- Tourniquet
What are the symptoms of shock?
- Sweaty but cool skin
- Pale skin
- Restlessness or nervousness
- Thirst
- Severe bleeding
- Confusion
- Rapid breathing
- Blotchy blue skin
- Nausea and or vomiting
