first aid neurology pgs 451- Flashcards
what part of body drives circadian rhythm?
SCN of hypothalamus (suprachiasmatic nucleus)
“need sleep to be charismatic”
physiology of circadian sleep….trigger?
less light –> SCN of hypothalamus –> Norepi release –> pineal gland –> melatonin
nocturnal release of ACTH, prolactin, NE, and melatonin
what gland releases melatonin?
pineal gland
REM freq at night
about every 90 min and duration increases towards the end of sleep
how do alcohol, benzodiazepines, and barbituates affect sleep?
decrease amount of delta wave (N3) deep and REM sleep
lead to more lighter N1/N2 sleep
treat sleep enuresis (bedwetting)?
desmopressin acetate (mimics ADH)
treat night terrors/sleep walking?
benzodiazepines (less REM sleep so less dreams and more sleep so less night walking)
input and destination for all hearing sensory ascending info
input to superior olivary nucleus and inferior colliculus of tectum
destination to auditory cortex of temporal lobe
MEDIAL = music
limbic system
neuronal structures involved in emotion, long-term memory, olfaction, behavior modification, and ANS function
Structures = hippocampus, amygdala, fornix, mamillary bodies, and cingulate gyrus
5 Fs = feeding, fleeing, fighting, feeling, sex
cerebellum
movement coordination, balance;
